30 000 SOUTH AFRICAN YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN THE VUKA RUGBY PROGRAMME OPERATED BY SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY LEGENDS EVERY YEAR – BUT ALMOST NONE OF THEIR CLUB COACHES ARE TRAINED FOR QUALIFIED.

Most of the coaches nurturing township and rural rugby talent work unpaid – motivated entirely a love of the game and a passion for development – and spend their time off the field searching for jobs.  The People Project 360 Degrees' association with South African Rugby Legends aims to change that narrative by providing formal skills development and qualifications for rugby coaches that will facilitate employment opportunities in clubs, schools and higher education facilities.

The goal is for coaches' continued involvement in the game to be sustained and standards of coaching at grassroots level improved – and also to create opportunities for a potential career path into the rugby coaching industry at higher levels.

A key focus of the learnership is transitioning coaches from the traditional coach-centric coaching model to a player-centric approach.  Research has demonstrated that player-centric coaching yields greater enjoyment by players, more sustained participation – and as a result, better academic performance.

The programme is focused on townships, informal settlements, peri-urban and urban locations in KZN, Western and Eastern Cape – and aims to recruit, educate and certify 150 black work-seekers.
